The WALTER 6917247 is a solid carbide turning insert with ISO designation CCMT120404-FM4 WSM10S, engineered for precision metal removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a PVD-applied TiAlN plus Al2O3 plus Al multilayer coating and an FM4 chip breaker geometry designed to manage chip control in demanding cuts. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a positive rake angle of 6 degrees, producing a clean, efficient cutting action with a honed cutting edge. Licensed machinists and CNC operators will find it well-suited to finishing and semi-finishing operations.
Primary workpiece materials for this insert are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material codes M and S). It also performs in secondary applications on steel (ISO code P), covering a broad range of shop turning work. Suitable applications include turning, facing, and boring. The insert holds to ANSI and ISO standards and carries industry standard number CCMT431-FM4 WSM10S. Maximum depth of cut is 1.50 mm (0.1000 inch). The FM4 chip breaker geometry keeps chips manageable at moderate feeds and depths, making it a practical choice for stainless and titanium where chip control is critical to surface finish and tool life.
Designed for CCMT-style screw-on toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick diamond insert with a 0.2170-inch hole diameter. Conforms to ANSI and ISO CCMT120404 / CCMT431 standards.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the pocket and screw threads for chips or damage before each insert change to maintain accurate tool nose position.
