The WALTER 6890874 is a DNMG-style solid carbide turning insert designed for precision material removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the DNMG150408-MS3 WSM01 designation, this insert features a TiAlN and Al2O3/ZrN multilayer PVD coating that extends tool life in demanding cut conditions. The MS3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium finishing and semi-finishing passes. The insert is neutral-hand, carries a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, and delivers four usable cutting edges per insert. An insert length of 15.50 mm and a 0.8 mm corner radius make it well-suited for controlled depth-of-cut applications where surface finish and edge stability are critical.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations. Its primary target workpiece materials are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium - material groups M and S in the ISO classification system. It also performs in secondary applications on steel, non-ferrous metals, and hard materials (ISO P, N, and H). The WSM01 grade and PVD coating process make this insert a practical choice for shops running stainless components, aerospace alloys, or titanium parts where built-up edge and heat management are ongoing concerns. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops, aerospace, and medical manufacturing are the typical end users.
Designed for use in standard DNMG insert-style toolholders that accept a 55-degree diamond insert with a clamp-and-pin holding method, a 5.16 mm hole diameter, and an inscribed circle of 12.70 mm. Confirm toolholder specifications before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or rotating the insert. Use the correct torque driver for the clamp screw - follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification, as this insert does not carry its own clamp torque value. Inspect the insert pocket and locating pin for wear or debris before seating a new edge; a contaminated pocket will shift the insert position and degrade surface finish.
