The WALTER 6890844 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG120408-MS3 WSM20S configuration, designed for high-performance metal removal in demanding CNC turning operations. It carries a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al, delivering heat and wear resistance suited to difficult-to-machine materials. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, a honed cutting edge, and a 0.8 mm corner radius. With four usable cutting edges per insert and the MS3 chip breaker geometry, it targets efficient chip control across turning, facing, and boring applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in precision manufacturing environments are the primary users.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S), with secondary suitability for steel (ISO code P). It fits the CNMG-MS3 series and meets both ANSI and ISO standards, making it compatible with standard CNMG toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods. The insert is rated for a maximum depth of cut of 12.90 mm (0.5080 inches) and is suited to both roughing and semi-finishing passes on CNC lathes and turning centers in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in standard CNMG toolholders that accept clamp or pin insert holding methods. Conforms to ANSI and ISO CNMG insert standards (ISO code CNMG120408-MS3, industry standard number CNMG432-MS3). Verify toolholder clearance and insert seat dimensions before installation.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully and evenly in the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamp or pin to manufacturer torque specifications. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for debris or wear that could affect seating and cutting edge runout.
