The WALTER 6890494 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. Carrying the ISO designation CNMG120404-MS3 WS10, this insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and the MS3 chip breaker geometry. It has an inscribed circle of 12.70 mm (0.5000 inches), an insert length of 12.90 mm (0.5080 inches), and a corner radius of 0.40 mm (1/64 inch). The WS10 uncoated carbide grade is engineered for materials that are difficult to machine, and the honed cutting edge style supports controlled chip formation across a variety of turning operations. Machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the typical end users.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations. Its primary workpiece material designation is superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S), with a secondary designation of non-ferrous metals (ISO material code N). The negative rake angle and CNMG geometry make it a practical choice for stable, high-load cuts in aerospace, energy, and industrial component machining where tough, heat-resistant alloys are common. The MS3 chip breaker supports chip control across a range of depths and feed rates without wiper geometry.
Designed to fit toolholders that accept CNMG 431 (CNMG120404) style inserts using clamp or pin clamping methods. Also identified by industry standard number CNMG431-MS3 WS10. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and clamping style before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before installing the insert, as contamination can cause improper seating and premature edge failure. Index to a fresh cutting edge rather than rotating a worn edge back into service.
