The WALTER 6646221 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the SX series, designed for precision grooving operations on superalloys, steels, and stainless materials. It carries the WSM33S manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied Al2O3 and TiN coating for thermal resistance and edge durability. The insert delivers a 3.00 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 50.00 mm, making it well suited to deep, narrow grooving passes. Its positive rake geometry and CF5 chip breaker promote controlled chip formation in difficult-to-machine alloys. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working on aerospace, energy, or precision-component work will find this insert a direct fit for their tooling system.
This insert is intended for grooving applications in high-performance materials including superalloys and stainless steels in both production and job-shop environments. The neutral hand orientation supports straightforward toolholder installation without directional restriction. The self-grip holding method provides secure insert retention during interrupted cuts and deep-groove passes. It is sized for use in SX-series toolholders with a size 3 insert seat and conforms to both ANSI and ISO standards, identified by the code SX-3E300N02-CF5 WSM33S on both standards.
Designed for use in SX-series toolholders accepting a size 3 insert seat. Compatible with machines running superalloy, steel, and stainless workpiece materials as indicated by primary workpiece material codes M, P, and S.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer for self-grip seat engagement. Inspect the insert seat and clamping pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended depth-of-cut or feed-rate parameters for this insert size.
