The WALTER 6498449 is a solid carbide turning insert in the WCMT trigon geometry with grade WKK20S, designed for precision metal removal in CNC and manual lathe operations. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer TiCN/Al2O3/TiCN coating under the Tiger-tec Silver series, delivering high wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The 80-degree included angle and positive rake geometry combine with a honed cutting edge to reduce cutting forces and extend tool life. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 5/32-inch thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert is suited for light to medium turning passes on demanding workpiece materials. Machinists, toolroom operators, and CNC turning specialists are the primary end users.
This insert is optimized for turning, facing, and boring operations with cast iron as the primary workpiece material (ISO material group K, grade K20) and steel as the secondary workpiece material (ISO material group P, grade P10). It is held in place by a screw-on clamping method and is compatible with standard WCMT insert toolholders. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both right-hand and left-hand toolholder configurations. Maximum depth of cut is 0.098 inches (2.50 mm). Each insert provides three usable cutting edges, making it cost-efficient for high-volume turning cells.
Designed for use in standard WCMT screw-on turning toolholders. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle WCMT insert. ISO designation WCMT06T304-MK4 WKK20S; industry standard number WCMT3(2.5)1-MK4 WKK20S. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver for the clamping screw to ensure secure seating without cracking the carbide body. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new edge.
