The WALTER 6171338 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations in CNC and manual lathe applications. Carrying the ISO designation P4840P-7R-E67 WKP35S, this insert features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiCN, delivering thermal stability and wear resistance across a wide range of cutting conditions. The 80-degree square geometry provides a strong cutting edge, while the E67 chipbreaker geometry promotes reliable chip control during medium to finish turning. With four usable cutting edges per insert, it offers consistent cost-per-edge performance suited to production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as part of a qualified toolholder system targeting ISO material groups M and P.
This insert is applied in turning of steel and stainless steel workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO primary workpiece material codes P and M. It is well suited for medium turning passes where chip control and surface finish consistency are priorities. The WKP35S grade, classified under material grades K35 and P35, is engineered for stable cutting in both continuous and mildly interrupted cuts. The E67 chipbreaker makes it appropriate for finishing and semi-finishing passes on carbon steels, alloy steels, and austenitic stainless steels in both job shop and production settings.
Designed for use in toolholders and boring bars compatible with the P4840P insert style and Series 7RP4840P system. Consult the toolholder manufacturer specifications to confirm seating, clamping, and pocket geometry before installation.
Turning inserts of this type are installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Use the correct torque driver and clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert - do not over-tighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before each seating to ensure proper contact and edge repeatability.
