The WALTER 6154489 is a square indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable insert drills in metal-cutting operations. Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied Tiger Tec coating in grade WXP40, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability when drilling stainless steel and steel. It carries the P48448A57 designation, indicating a square shape, A57 chipbreaker geometry, and insert size code 48. With four cutting edges and a 90-degree included angle, the insert provides multiple index positions before replacement, reducing tooling cost per hole. Right-hand cutting direction is standard. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is intended for indexable drill bodies requiring a square P484-style insert with an inscribed circle of 0.6890 inches (17.50 mm). The A57 chipbreaker geometry is optimized for chip control in stainless steel and general steel applications, covering ISO material groups M and P at grades M30, P40, and S30. It is suited for production drilling environments where consistent hole quality and tool life are priorities. The ISO code for this insert is P4841C-8R-A57 WXP40, which can be used to verify fitment with compatible drill bodies.
Designed to fit indexable drill bodies accepting P484-style square inserts with an inscribed circle of 17.50 mm and insert size 8. Verify compatibility using ISO code P4841C-8R-A57 WXP40 against the drill body manufacturer specifications.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the drill body and spindle are fully de-energized and locked out before seating or indexing the insert. Use the correct torx or hex key as specified by the drill body manufacturer for the clamping screw - do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or damage before seating a new edge.
