The WALTER 6121585 is a CVD-coated solid carbide turning insert in the DNMG 55-degree diamond shape, designed for high-productivity metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Part of the Tiger-tec Silver series, it carries a multilayer TiCN / Al2O3 / TiCN CVD coating under grade WKK20S, delivering thermal resistance and wear life suited to continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert measures 0.5 inches on the inscribed circle, features a 0.0315-inch corner radius, and is ground to a negative rake geometry with a chamfered and honed cutting edge. Four usable cutting edges reduce per-edge tooling cost in high-volume production environments.
This insert is engineered primarily for cast iron (ISO material group K, grade K20) and secondarily for steel (ISO group P, grade P10). Typical applications include external turning, facing, boring, and back turning on medium to large diameter workpieces in automotive, heavy equipment, and general machining operations. The MK5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for moderate depths of cut up to 0.197 inches (5.00 mm) and controls chip evacuation across a range of feed rates on cast iron and steel components.
Designed for use in standard DNMG-style toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 55-degree diamond insert with clamp and pin retention. Compatible with ANSI and ISO toolholder systems referencing insert size code 432. Suitable for turning, facing, boring, and back turning setups on cast iron and steel workpieces.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine spindle locked out and at a complete stop before indexing or replacing the insert. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp to avoid micro-movement under cutting loads. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before each insert change. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and assembly guidelines for DNMG-style pocket systems.
