The WALTER 6118453 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. Built to the Tiger-tec series standard, it carries a PVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiAlN, and ZrCN that supports high cutting speeds and extended tool life in demanding applications. The insert has a neutral hand orientation and a cutting width of 0.1252 inches (3.18 mm), with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0630 inches (1.60 mm). The full-radius geometry with a corner radius of 0.0626 inches (1.59 mm) and the RD4 chip breaker promote controlled chip formation. Grade WSM33S is optimized for tough workpiece materials. Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops or precision manufacturing environments install this insert using a clamp-style insert holder.
This insert is primarily intended for grooving superalloys, stainless steels, and general steels, as indicated by its material grade designations S30, M30, and P35. Primary workpiece material codes are M, P, and S, covering a range from structural steels to heat-resistant superalloys. The double-ended design allows the insert to be indexed to a second cutting edge, extending usable tool life per insert. It fits within the GX insert system, which uses clamp-style toolholders compatible with the GX24 insert pocket format. Typical applications include grooving, recessing, and undercutting operations in aerospace, medical device, and general precision machining contexts.
Designed for use in GX24-series clamp-style grooving toolholders. Insert conforms to ANSI code GX242E318N16RD4 WSM33S and ISO code GX24-2E318N16-RD4. Compatible with toolholders accepting GX2 insert size code 2E318N16.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. The machine spindle must be stopped and the turret or toolpost must be de-energized before seating or removing the insert. Use the appropriate clamp screw torque as specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not estimate. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for debris or wear before indexing to the second cutting edge.
