The WALTER 5847078 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the industry standard designation CNMG432-NM4WSM10. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0315-inch corner radius. The insert is coated with a multilayer PVD TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN stack under the WSM10 grade designation, targeting performance in stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. With four available cutting edges and an NM4 chip breaker geometry, it is suited for roughing and medium machining passes. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists install this insert in production and job-shop turning environments.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring operations on difficult-to-machine materials, primarily stainless steel and superalloys including titanium, with steel as a secondary workpiece material. The NM4 chip breaker geometry manages chip formation across a depth-of-cut range up to 0.1692 inches, making it appropriate for both heavier roughing and transitional medium-stock-removal passes on CNC lathes and turning centers. It conforms to ANSI size code 432 and ISO size code 120408, fitting standard CNMG toolholders used across a wide range of turning platforms.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard CNMG432 and ISO CNMG120408 insert seats. Compatible with CNMG-style toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods. Industry standard designations are CNMG432-NM4 WSM10 (ANSI) and CNMG120408-NM4 WSM10 (ISO).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before installing; contamination under the insert can cause premature edge failure or insert fracture. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications for the specific clamp or pin style in use.
