The WALTER 5834966 is a solid carbide turning insert in a DCGT style, designed for precision metal cutting in professional machining environments. It features a multilayer PVD coating of TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN under the WSM20 grade designation, providing wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert carries a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 18 degrees and a positive side clearance, geometry that reduces cutting forces on demanding workpiece materials. It belongs to the Tiger-tec series and is manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards, making it a direct fit for toolholders specifying DCGT geometry.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations on stainless steel and superalloys as the primary target materials, with steel as a secondary application. It is a two-cutting-edge, neutral-hand insert held by a screw-lock method, appropriate for use in CNC turning centers and manual lathes where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The honed cutting edge style makes it especially suitable for finishing passes on difficult-to-machine alloys.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit insert for toolholders accepting DCGT-geometry screw-lock inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Compatible with multi-use turning, facing, boring, and back turning applications. Chip breaker designation PF2 suits finishing operations on stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and steel workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex driver to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder specification - do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excessive clamp force. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating a new insert.
