The WALTER 5585400 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ANSI designation CNMG433-NM4WSM20 and the ISO equivalent CNMG120412-NM4 WSM20. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, and a 3/64 inch (0.0469 inch) corner radius. The WSM20 grade substrate is finished with a multilayer PVD coating - TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN - engineered for heat resistance and wear life in demanding cut conditions. Four cutting edges are available per insert. The NM4 chip breaker geometry is rated for roughing and medium machining operations, making this insert productive across a wide range of material removal rates.
This insert is targeted at machining stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium as its primary workpiece materials, with steel as a secondary application - corresponding to ISO material codes M, S, and P. It supports turning, facing, and boring operations and is suited for both production and job-shop environments where multi-application versatility matters. The negative rake and neutral hand configuration fit standard CNMG toolholders widely used in CNC lathes. The insert is clamped or pin-locked depending on the toolholder design, and the honed cutting edge style provides added edge stability when cutting abrasive or work-hardening alloys.
Designed for use in standard CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick negative-rake insert. Suitable for CNC lathes and turning centers running stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and steel workpieces. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamp or pin seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before securing the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque guidelines and verify insert seating before returning the machine to service.
