The WALTER 5354529 is a solid carbide turning insert designated WNMG432-NR4WSM30, engineered for high-performance turning, facing, and boring operations in demanding materials. It carries the WSM30 manufacturer grade with a multilayer PVD-applied TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN coating system designed to handle the elevated heat and abrasion demands of stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The insert features an 80-degree trigon (W) shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 0.03125 inch corner radius, and 6 usable cutting edges, delivering strong cost-per-edge value in production turning environments. A chamfered and honed cutting edge style improves edge integrity on difficult-to-machine materials. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers in aerospace, energy, and industrial manufacturing are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for medium to finish turning applications on stainless steel (ISO material code M), superalloys, and titanium (ISO material code S), with secondary suitability for steel (ISO material code P). The NR4 chip breaker geometry is optimized for these material groups and supports stable chip control across a range of feed and depth-of-cut conditions. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.2278 inches. The neutral hand designation makes it adaptable to standard right-hand turning setups. Typical applications include OD turning, facing, and light boring on CNC lathes in both job shop and high-volume production settings.
Designed for use in WNMG-series toolholders that accept a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick, 80-degree trigon insert with a 0.203 inch hole diameter. Compatible with clamp and pin holding methods per ANSI and ISO toolholder standards for the WNMG insert family.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket and tighten the clamp or pin per the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating each new cutting edge. Refer to WALTER cutting data recommendations for appropriate speeds, feeds, and depth-of-cut ranges for the target workpiece material.
