The VLIER SSS54 is a standard threaded spring plunger designed for indexing, positioning, and light-duty detent applications in mechanical assemblies. The body and nose are both constructed from stainless steel, making this plunger suitable for environments where corrosion resistance is a priority. It features a 1/4-20 thread with a 1 inch thread length and a 3/16 inch projection. Initial end force is 3 pounds and final end force is 13 pounds, giving the installer a defined feel and repeatable positioning force. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and mechanical assembly professionals are the primary installers of this component.
The SSS54 is used in jigs, fixtures, tooling plates, and precision mechanical assemblies where a spring-loaded ball or nose is needed to locate or retain a moving part at a set position. The 1/4-20 thread size is a common standard that fits a wide range of tapped holes in aluminum, steel, and other structural materials. Its stainless steel construction makes it appropriate for washdown environments, food-processing adjacent applications, and any setting where mild chemical or moisture exposure is a concern.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or new-installation spring plunger for any application requiring a 1/4-20 threaded spring plunger with standard 1 inch body length and stainless steel construction.
Installation is performed by threading the SSS54 into a pre-tapped 1/4-20 hole using a hex key or appropriate driver on the body hex. Ensure the receiving material has sufficient thread engagement depth to match the 1 inch thread length. No locking element is present, so a thread-locking compound may be applied if permanent positioning is required. Deburr and clean the tapped hole before installation to avoid damaging the plunger nose.
