The VLIER SSM51A is a stubby threaded spring plunger designed for precise positioning, indexing, and light retention applications in restricted-space environments. It uses an 8-32 thread and measures 0.437 inches in both body length and thread length, with a maximum plunger diameter of 0.07 inches and a projection of 0.052 inches. The stainless steel body and nose deliver corrosion resistance suitable for demanding service conditions. Initial end force is 0.5 pounds and final end force is 1.5 pounds, making it appropriate for high end force applications where space constraints prevent the use of standard-length plungers. Machinists, toolmakers, and precision assembly technicians are the primary installers.
This spring plunger fits applications where a standard or full-length plunger cannot be accommodated due to shallow bore depth or tight housing geometry. The stubby profile and compact 0.437-inch body length make it well suited for jigs, fixtures, tooling plates, and light mechanical assemblies where repeatable detent or positioning force is required in a minimal footprint. It is sold individually and is appropriate for both new builds and replacement of worn or damaged plungers in existing tooling.
Designed as a direct-fit threaded spring plunger for applications requiring an 8-32 thread in restricted or shallow-bore housings, including jigs, fixtures, and precision tooling assemblies.
Installation is performed using a screwdriver or hex key suited to the drive style of the plunger body, and the mating bore must be tapped to 8-32 before installation. Power down or de-energize any machine or assembly before servicing plungers in live tooling or automated fixtures. Do not overtighten, as this can compress the internal spring beyond its design range or damage the stainless steel threads in softer mating materials. Confirm plunger projection and end force values are appropriate for the detent or retention load required before finalizing installation.
