The VLIER SSB56 is a threaded ball plunger designed for controlled end-force applications where space and weight constraints are critical. Featuring a 5/16-18 thread, a 0.156 inch stainless steel ball diameter, and a body length of 0.578 inches, this is one of the smallest and lightest spring-loaded positioning devices in its class. The ball extends a maximum of 0.04 inches beyond the body face, delivering 4 pounds of initial end force and 9 pounds of final end force. Both the body and ball are constructed from stainless steel, making this plunger suitable for environments where corrosion resistance matters. It is installed by maintenance technicians and mechanical assemblers in precision positioning, indexing, and detent applications.
The SSB56 is suited for use in light-duty mechanical assemblies where repeatable, spring-loaded detent action is needed in a compact footprint. Its controlled force range makes it appropriate for jigs, fixtures, tooling plates, and automated equipment where consistent positioning without locking is required. The absence of a locking element means the ball can be depressed and released freely, making it well suited to applications that cycle frequently. The color code for this plunger is purple, which aids in quick field identification when multiple plunger specs are in use at the same installation.
Designed for use in precision mechanical assemblies, jigs, fixtures, tooling plates, and automated equipment requiring a compact, spring-loaded detent or positioning device with a 5/16-18 threaded body.
Installation requires a properly tapped 5/16-18 threaded hole in the mating component. Use appropriate thread-engaging tools and ensure the hole depth accommodates the 0.578 inch body length without bottoming out the plunger prematurely. De-energize or lock out any automated equipment before installing or servicing plungers in moving assemblies. Do not overtighten, as stainless steel fasteners are susceptible to galling without proper torque control practices.
