The VARGUS 50973 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external thread turning on CNC lathes and manual threading operations. Manufactured to the 3ER insert style specification, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that improves wear resistance and heat tolerance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert produces a partial profile 60-degree thread form and covers a threading range of 48 to 16 TPI (0.50 to 1.50 mm pitch), making it a versatile single insert for multiple thread sizes within that range. Right-hand cutting geometry, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a thickness of 3.60 mm match standard 3ER toolholder pockets without modification.
This insert is suited for external threading on turning centers in both production and job-shop environments. The universal primary workpiece material classification means it is compatible with carbon steels, stainless steels, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys - covering material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Machinists and CNC operators working with mixed-material jobs benefit from keeping this insert in rotation as a general-purpose external threading solution. It ships individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 10 pieces.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for 3ER-style toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle laydown threading insert. Verify toolholder pocket specifications before ordering to confirm insert style and size code compatibility.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing threading inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw per the toolholder manufacturer's specification - do not overtighten, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excess clamping force. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and repeatability.
