The VALUE COLLECTION PR01.5X12 is a decarb-free A2 air-hardening tool steel round bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die shops that need ready-to-machine stock. At 1.5 inches in diameter and 12 inches in overall length, this bar ships oversize on diameter with a tolerance of +0.020 to +0.035 inches, giving the machinist clean, scale-free material with enough stock to finish to final dimension. The decarb-free surface condition eliminates the need to skim off a decarburized outer layer before heat treatment, saving setup time and material. A2 tool steel offers a good balance of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability during air-hardening cycles, making it a common choice for punches, dies, and gauges.
This round bar is suited for tool-and-die work, jig and fixture components, and general precision machining applications in job shop and manufacturing environments. The 12-inch stock length accommodates single-piece blanks for most punch and die applications without additional cutoff waste. At 6.5 pounds per foot of weight, the 12-inch piece is a manageable single-piece form for bench and lathe work. Machinists working in both short-run prototype and production tooling will find the +0.250 to -0.000 inch length tolerance acceptable for most roughing operations.
Designed as a general-purpose A2 tool steel round bar for use in tool-and-die, punch, gauge, and precision machining applications requiring air-hardening grade material in a 1.5-inch diameter stock form.
Cutting and machining of A2 tool steel should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate speeds and feeds for hardened or annealed tool steel stock. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel — including austenitizing, quenching in air, and tempering — should follow the material supplier's published guidelines and be performed in properly calibrated equipment. Dispose of chips and grinding swarf in accordance with applicable shop safety and environmental regulations.
