The VALUE COLLECTION O1D9646 is an O-1 oil hardening tool steel drill rod sized at 9/64 inch (0.141 inches) in diameter and 36 inches in length. Tool steel drill rod in the O-1 grade is a general-purpose, oil-hardening alloy used as raw stock for fabricating punches, dies, pins, shafts, and custom tooling. The O-1 grade offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil quenching to achieve high hardness. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and fabrication shops rely on this stock for precision ground applications where tight diameter tolerances are required.
This drill rod is suited for shop fabrication environments where round bar stock must be cut to length, turned, or ground into finished tooling components. Typical applications include gauge pins, arbors, punches, and small shafts in both prototype and production tooling. The 36-inch length allows multiple finished pieces to be cut from a single rod, reducing waste and setup time for batch tooling operations.
Designed as standard O-1 oil hardening tool steel round stock compatible with general shop fabrication, toolmaking, and machining applications requiring 9/64 inch diameter precision ground bar.
Cutting and machining of tool steel rod should be performed with appropriate carbide or HSS tooling and cutting fluid. Heat treating to final hardness should follow established O-1 quench-and-temper procedures using an oil quench medium. Always wear appropriate PPE when grinding or cutting hardened tool steel. Consult material safety data and applicable shop safety standards before heat treating operations.
