The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04911269 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal threads in metal workpieces. It produces a 5/16-24 UNF left-hand thread with a taper chamfer that guides the tap into the hole gradually, reducing the force needed to start the cut. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap handles general-purpose threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The H3 thread limit keeps the finished thread within a controlled tolerance range, making it suitable for applications requiring a 3B class of fit. Thread length is 1 inch and overall length is 2-23/32 inches. Machinists and maintenance technicians reach for this style of tap for through-hole threading operations on manual or CNC equipment.
This tap is used in applications where a left-hand internal thread is required, such as assemblies that must resist loosening under counterclockwise rotation. The taper chamfer style is well suited for through-holes where there is clearance for the tap to exit the workpiece. It is commonly used in job shops, maintenance and repair operations, and production environments where 5/16-24 UNF threaded connections are standard. The 4-flute design provides good chip clearance and thread finish on ductile materials.
Designed as a standard straight flute tap for cutting 5/16-24 UNF internal left-hand threads in through-hole applications across general machining and maintenance work.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or machine spindle. Before tapping, verify the correct tap drill size for a 5/16-24 thread and ensure the hole is properly deburred. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Left-hand taps must be rotated counterclockwise to cut and should not be forced if resistance increases suddenly, as this can result in tap breakage.
