The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04554135 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in through-hole applications. Made from high speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it produces clean right-hand threads to a Class 2B tolerance with an H5 thread limit. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads — makes it well suited for through-hole threading where the tap can advance through the workpiece. At 3-3/8 inches overall length with a 1-21/32-inch thread length, it fits standard tap handles and machine setups used in production and maintenance machining environments. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is used in general-purpose threading operations on ferrous and non-ferrous metals where UNC thread form is required. It is appropriate for both manual tapping with a tap wrench and machine tapping on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and manual mills at appropriate speeds and feeds. The spiral point design pushes chips forward ahead of the tap rather than packing them in the flutes, making it particularly effective in through-hole work where chip evacuation is not restricted. Coolant-through capability is not included, so conventional flood or mist cooling applies where required.
Designed as a standard replacement or tooling addition for any application requiring a 1/2-13 UNC 2B spiral point plug tap in HSS with H5 thread limit. Fits standard 1/2-inch tap holders and machine tap adapters used in common threading operations.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping arm, or machine tap holder. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 1/2-13 UNC thread before starting. Apply appropriate cutting fluid to reduce heat and extend tool life. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and never force a tap that has seized — back it out carefully to clear chips.
