The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04531240 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-holes. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this plug chamfer tap is suited for general-purpose threading operations in a range of materials including mild steel, aluminum, and plastics. The 5/16-24 UNF thread form and H2 thread limit provide consistent dimensional accuracy for fine-thread applications. With 2 flutes and a spiral point geometry, the tap pushes chips ahead of the cutting edge rather than packing them into the flute, making it well suited for through-hole work. Licensed machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool and die professionals are the typical end users.
This tap is used in production and maintenance environments where 5/16-24 UNF internal threads are required. Common applications include threaded hole repair, fixture fabrication, and new-hole tapping in through-hole configurations. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in, making it appropriate for both hand tapping and machine tapping operations with a drill press, CNC machining center, or tapping head. It is not intended for blind-hole chip-packing applications where a bottoming tap would be required.
Designed as a standard replacement or production tap for through-hole 5/16-24 UNF threading operations. Compatible with standard tap handles, tapping heads, and CNC rigid tapping setups that accept this shank size and thread specification.
Always secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded. For machine tapping, verify spindle speed and feed rate are set correctly for the tap diameter and material to avoid tool breakage. Right-hand thread direction requires conventional clockwise rotation when viewed from the shank end. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges show damage.
