The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04489019 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting 1-8 UNC internal threads in through-holes and blind-hole applications where chip evacuation is managed manually or with through-coolant-free setups. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap delivers solid performance across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The plug chamfer style — featuring a moderate lead-in of 3 to 5 chamfered threads — makes it the standard choice for general-purpose tapping where the tap can pass through or nearly through the workpiece. It holds an H4 thread limit and a 3B class of fit, producing threads that meet standard tolerance requirements for most mechanical assemblies.
This tap is suited for machine shop, maintenance, and production environments where 1-inch coarse-thread holes are being cut or repaired. It is commonly used in job shops, industrial maintenance operations, and fabrication facilities on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. With a 2.5-inch thread length and 5.125-inch overall length, it accommodates deep reach requirements without extension tooling in most standard spindle setups. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional 1-8 UNC fastener applications.
Designed as a standard straight flute tap for use in manual, drill press, and CNC tapping operations requiring 1-8 UNC internal threads. No coolant-through capability; suited for setups using flood coolant or cutting fluid applied externally.
Tapping operations should be performed by a machinist or maintenance technician familiar with speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Ensure the machine spindle is powered down and the workpiece is securely fixtured before loading the tap. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Follow ANSI B94.9 or shop-standard procedures for tapping depth and backing out the tap to break chips when working in blind holes.
