The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04480208 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads to a 1/4-20 UNC specification. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap is built for general-purpose threading in through-holes and open-ended applications. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — makes it the standard choice for most production and repair threading jobs. With 4 flutes and an H5 thread limit, it holds tight tolerance for a 2B class of fit. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, maintenance mechanics, and trade professionals across HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work routinely use plug taps for field repairs and shop fabrication.
This tap is suited for tapping 1/4-20 UNC threads in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composite materials where a standard straight-flute geometry is appropriate. It performs best in through-hole applications where chips can fall away freely. The 2B class of fit makes it compatible with standard 2A fasteners used throughout residential and commercial mechanical systems, equipment frames, junction boxes, and pipe hangers. It is a single-piece tap used with a tap wrench or machine holder in drill press, mill, or hand-tapping operations.
Designed as a standard replacement or shop-stock plug tap for any application requiring 1/4-20 UNC internal threads at a 2B class of fit. Fits standard tap wrenches and machine tap holders accepting straight-shank taps in the appropriate shank diameter.
Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 1/4-20 UNC threads. Apply a suitable cutting fluid to extend tool life and improve thread finish, especially in steel and stainless workpieces. Back the tap out periodically to break and clear chips when hand-tapping in deeper holes. Never force a tap against resistance — back off to clear chips before continuing to avoid tap breakage.
