The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04476131 is a straight flute tap designed to cut 5/8-11 UNC internal threads in through-holes and accessible blind holes. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers reliable thread cutting performance in a range of common shop metals. It features a taper chamfer, which distributes cutting load across the first 8 to 10 threads to ease entry and reduce breakage risk. With 4 flutes and an H3 thread limit, it produces Class 3B fit threads suitable for close-tolerance fastener applications. Overall length is 3-13/16 inches with a thread length of 1-13/16 inches. It weighs 0.18 pounds. Machinists, tool and die workers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
This tap is suited for general-purpose threading operations in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments. The 5/8-11 UNC thread form is one of the most common unified coarse thread sizes, used extensively in structural fastening, machinery assembly, and equipment repair. The taper chamfer makes this tap a good choice for starting threads in open setups, whether run by hand with a tap wrench or driven under power in a drill press or tapping machine with appropriate speed and feed control.
Designed as a standard replacement or stock tap for any application requiring a 5/8-11 UNC Class 3B internal thread. Compatible with manual tap wrenches, tapping attachments, drill presses, and CNC tapping cycles configured for the appropriate speed and feed for the workpiece material.
Threading operations should be performed with the workpiece securely fixtured and the tap aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface to avoid tap breakage and thread misalignment. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. When tapping by hand, reverse the tap periodically to break chips. Power tapping setups should use a torque-limiting or floating tap holder to prevent overload.
