The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04464202 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a 1/2-20 UNF thread profile. Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers reliable thread-cutting performance in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads — makes it suitable for through-hole and most blind-hole applications where adequate clearance exists below the thread. With 4 flutes and an H2 thread limit, it holds close tolerances suited to standard-fit threaded assemblies. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die workers keep this tap in regular rotation for production and repair threading operations.
This tap is used in general metalworking, MRO maintenance, and machine shop environments. It threads 1/2-20 UNF holes in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar materials. The plug chamfer style makes it one of the most versatile chamfer options, starting easily in a hole while still cutting to near-full depth. It is suited to manual hand-tapping with a tap wrench as well as low-speed machine tapping on drill presses, mills, or CNC equipment when used with appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil.
Designed as a standard replacement or stock tap for any application requiring a 1/2-20 UNF right-hand internal thread. Compatible with standard 1/2-20 UNF tap holders, floating tap chucks, and tap wrenches sized for this shank diameter.
Machinists and maintenance technicians should drill the correct tap drill size for 1/2-20 UNF before threading. Always apply cutting oil or tapping fluid during the tapping operation to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Back the tap off periodically when hand-tapping to break chips, particularly in steel. Secure the workpiece firmly and align the tap perpendicular to the hole face before applying torque.
