The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04422648 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap threads 2-64 UNF right-hand threads to a 2B class of fit. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — makes it a general-purpose choice suitable for most standard tapping operations. With an overall length of 1.75 inches and a thread length of 0.4375 inches, this is a compact tool intended for small-fastener work. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and toolroom professionals use taps in this size range for precision instrument work, electronics enclosures, and small mechanical assemblies.
This tap is suited for threading operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials where a UNF fine-thread form is specified. The 2-64 thread size is common in miniature fastener applications including instrument panels, circuit board hardware, optical mounts, and fine-adjustment mechanisms. The 3-flute straight flute design provides good chip clearance and is well-suited for use in through-hole applications or shallow blind holes. The H2 thread limit ensures the finished thread stays within tolerance for standard 2B fit hardware, making it reliable for production and repair work alike.
Designed as a standard straight flute tap for use in any manual tap wrench, T-handle, or machine tapping setup that accommodates the shank size of a 2-64 UNF tap.
Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the tap is started perpendicular to the surface to avoid cross-threading. When tapping by hand, back the tap off periodically to break chips. Do not force a tap that has become difficult to turn — back it out, clear chips, and re-apply cutting fluid before continuing.
