The VALUE COLLECTION JY4749081 is a 1-8 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap delivers consistent thread accuracy in production and maintenance threading operations. The plug chamfer — with approximately 3 to 5 threads of lead — makes it the standard choice for threading through-holes and deeper blind holes where a gradual entry is needed. At 5.125 inches overall length, the tap provides adequate shank clearance for use in standard tap wrenches and T-handle drivers. The H11 thread limit indicates an oversize tolerance of 0.0050 inches above nominal, which is commonly selected when tapping for coated fasteners or when thread gauging requirements call for a specific fit class.
This tap is suited for manual threading operations in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and trade environments. Right-hand cutting direction makes it compatible with standard tap wrenches and threading accessories. The 4-flute straight-flute configuration provides good chip control in materials such as mild steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar machinable alloys. It is appropriate for use in both production tapping and field repair scenarios where thread restoration or new thread creation is required in 1-8 UNC applications.
Designed for use in standard tap wrench holders and T-handle drivers that accept the shank diameter appropriate for 1-8 UNC hand taps. Suitable for threading through-holes and blind holes requiring a 1-8 UNC thread form at an H11 tolerance class.
Hand tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly sized tap wrench. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is started perpendicular to the work surface to prevent thread misalignment or tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped to reduce friction and extend tool life. Reverse the tap periodically during threading to break chips and clear flutes, particularly in deeper holes.
