The VALUE COLLECTION 556u 5 is a Size 5 taper pin reamer ground from high speed steel (HSS) for enlarging, finishing, and shaping tapered holes to accept standard taper pins. It features a straight flute geometry and a right-hand cutting direction, making it suitable for hand or machine operation in general-purpose machining applications. The small end diameter measures 0.2409 inches and the large end diameter measures 0.2994 inches, providing the precise taper required for a Size 5 pin fit. The 5/16-inch square shank seats securely in a tap wrench or machine holder. A bright, uncoated finish is standard, leaving the HSS substrate exposed for direct inspection and easy reconditioning by sharpening.
This reamer is used wherever a tapered pin hole must be sized or trued to accept a Size 5 taper pin — common in shaft-to-hub assemblies, tooling fixtures, jigs, and mechanical linkages across maintenance, repair, and production machining environments. It is appropriate for work in ferrous and non-ferrous metals when cutting speeds and feeds are kept within HSS limits. The 1:48 taper rate conforms to the standard taper pin specification, ensuring correct pin seating and pull-out resistance when the assembly is complete.
Designed as a standard-taper-rate reamer for Size 5 taper pin holes in general machining and maintenance applications. Fits any tap wrench, T-handle, or machine spindle accepting a 5/16-inch square shank.
Taper pin reamers are typically operated by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench for hand reaming or a drill press or milling machine for power reaming. Secure the workpiece firmly before beginning and apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve surface finish. Remove material incrementally, checking pin fit frequently to avoid over-reaming. Never force the reamer through the work — excessive lateral pressure can deflect the straight flute and produce an out-of-round hole.
