The VALUE COLLECTION 460-6160 is a square tool bit blank ground from M42 cobalt high-speed steel. It is an unground, ready-to-shape blank used by machinists and toolroom technicians to grind custom single-point lathe tools, form tools, and special-purpose cutting tools. The blank measures 0.25 inches wide by 0.25 inches high with a 6-inch overall length. M42 cobalt steel offers higher red-hardness than standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and harder work materials where heat buildup at the cutting edge is a concern.
This tool bit blank is used in manual and CNC lathe toolroom applications where a technician needs to grind a custom profile rather than use an indexable insert. Typical applications include one-off form tools, threading tools, and specialty boring tools ground to a specific geometry. The square cross-section allows for mounting in standard square-pocket tool holders and Armstrong-style holders common in manual lathe setups.
Designed as a standard square tool bit blank for use in Armstrong-style and equivalent square-pocket single-point tool holders accepting a 0.25-inch cross-section bit.
Tool bit blanks are ground to final geometry using a bench grinder or surface grinder with an appropriate abrasive wheel rated for high-speed steel. Always use eye protection and ensure the grinder tool rest is properly set before grinding. Inspect the finished cutting edge for cracks or irregularities before mounting in a tool holder. Secure the ground bit firmly in the holder and verify tool height before taking a cut.
