The VALUE COLLECTION 40100554 is an A-2 air hardening tool steel drill rod measuring 11mm (0.433 inches) in diameter and 36 inches in length. Drill rod stock in A-2 grade is a versatile, oil-free hardening tool steel that holds tight dimensional tolerances, making it well suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and custom tooling. The air hardening characteristic of A-2 reduces warping and distortion during heat treatment compared to oil or water hardening grades. At 1.5 pounds, this single-piece rod ships in ready-to-machine condition. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers typically specify this grade when dimensional stability through the hardening cycle is a priority.
This drill rod is used in machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments that manufacture or repair precision tooling components. Common applications include fabricating custom drill bushings, punches, and fixture components where consistent diameter and straightness are required. The 36-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple shorter tooling blanks cut to size on a horizontal band saw or cold saw. Suitable for both prototype and short-run production tooling environments.
Designed as standard A-2 tool steel drill rod stock for use in toolmaking, die making, and general machine shop fabrication where air hardening tool steel at 11mm diameter is specified.
Cutting and machining of tool steel drill rod should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate carbide or high-speed steel cutting tools. Secure the rod firmly in a vise or chuck before cutting to prevent movement. Heat treatment to final hardness should follow established A-2 tool steel tempering procedures and should be performed in a controlled furnace environment. Allow rods to cool per the A-2 air hardening process — do not quench in oil or water.
