The VALUE COLLECTION 3-550-025P is a carbide-tipped steel solid dead center designed for use in lathe tailstocks and machining fixtures. It features a 5MT (Morse Taper No. 5) shank for secure, precise mounting in compatible tailstock spindles. The 1.76-inch head diameter and standard point geometry provide stable workpiece support during turning operations. The carbide tip resists wear under high-speed and high-load conditions, extending service life compared to unhardened steel alternatives. At 4.36 pounds, this is a substantial, full-size center suited for medium to large workpiece diameters. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this type of dead center when workpiece rotation is handled by a drive dog or chuck rather than the center itself.
This solid dead center is used in metal turning applications on manual and CNC lathes equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper tailstock. It is appropriate for medium to heavy turning work where the workpiece does not rotate on the center, or where periodic lubrication of the contact point is part of the workflow. Typical applications include turning shafts, spindles, and cylindrical components where concentricity and rigid support are required. The standard point style suits conventional center-drilled workpieces.
Designed for use in lathe tailstocks and fixtures with a No. 5 Morse Taper (5MT) spindle bore. Consult machine documentation to confirm taper size before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists. Power down and lock out the lathe before seating or removing the center from the tailstock spindle. Insert the Morse Taper shank with a firm, clean push to seat it fully — never strike the body with a steel hammer. When used as a dead center, apply appropriate cutting oil or grease to the center-drilled hole in the workpiece to reduce friction and prevent galling at the contact point.
