Product Description

The VALUE COLLECTION 290-1174 is a lathe chuck key designed for tightening and loosening the jaws on manual lathe chucks. The key features a 4-inch body length and a 7/16-inch square drive that engages the chuck's key socket. It is compatible with 6-inch and 8-inch diameter lathe chucks, covering two of the most common chuck sizes found in machine shops and training facilities. Machinists and tool-room technicians reach for this style of key during chuck jaw changes and workpiece setups on manual engine lathes and toolroom lathes. At 0.75 pounds, the key is solid enough for consistent engagement without being cumbersome.

This lathe chuck key is suited for use on manual lathes in light manufacturing, vocational training shops, and general machine shop environments. It is intended for chucks with a 6-inch or 8-inch diameter that accept a 7/16-inch square key socket. The non-self-ejecting design is a standard configuration used across a wide range of conventional lathe setups where the operator manually removes the key after each use.

Key Features

  • Compatible with 6-inch and 8-inch diameter lathe chucks
  • 4-inch body length for adequate leverage during chuck jaw adjustment
  • 7/16-inch square drive size for positive socket engagement
  • Non-self-ejecting design — standard fit for conventional manual lathe chucks
  • Compact and lightweight at 0.75 pounds for easy handling

Compatibility

Designed for use with lathe chucks having a 6-inch or 8-inch diameter and a 7/16-inch square key socket, as is typical on manual engine lathes and toolroom lathes of comparable chuck size.

Installation Notes

Lathe chuck keys are installed and removed by hand — always remove the key from the chuck socket immediately after adjusting jaws and before starting the lathe spindle. Never leave a chuck key unattended in the chuck, as it becomes a serious projectile hazard when the spindle is engaged. Always confirm the lathe is powered off and the spindle has come to a complete stop before inserting the key. Follow your shop's lockout/tagout procedure before performing any chuck or workpiece change.
