The VALUE COLLECTION 24912 is a pre-hardened alloy steel flat stock bar made from Type 4142 steel, a chromium-molybdenum alloy known for its high strength and toughness in the hardened condition. Measuring 72 inches long by 5/8 inch wide by 0.63 inch thick and weighing 8.05 pounds, this flat stock is ready for immediate use in tooling, fixture, die, and machine component fabrication without the need for additional heat treatment. It is suitable for applications requiring a hard, wear-resistant steel bar with tight dimensional tolerances, including length tolerance of plus 1.00 inch, width tolerance of plus 0.005 inch, thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.002 inch, and square tolerance of 0.002 inch.
Type 4142 pre-hardened flat stock is commonly used in industrial and trade fabrication environments for producing jigs, fixtures, support rails, guide bars, and structural machine components. Its pre-hardened condition makes it a practical choice when machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians need a dimensionally consistent, high-strength steel bar that can be cut to length and put into service with minimal additional processing. This stock is suited to both job shop and production environments handling moderate to heavy-duty mechanical applications.
Designed as a general-purpose pre-hardened alloy steel flat stock for use in tooling, fixturing, and machine component fabrication applications requiring Type 4142 material specification.
Cutting and machining of pre-hardened 4142 steel requires tooling rated for hardened alloy steel; standard high-speed steel tooling may wear prematurely. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when cutting or grinding this material. Secure the bar firmly in a vise or fixture before cutting to prevent movement. If welding is required, follow qualified preheat and post-weld heat treatment procedures appropriate for 4142 alloy steel to avoid cracking.
