The VALUE COLLECTION -20870-L is a Letter L mechanics drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in a wide range of metal workpiece materials. Sized at 0.2900 inches (decimal), it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on contact and allows drilling to begin without a center punch in most applications. The bit is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish and uses a Weldon flat shank for positive drive in compatible chucks. A web-thinned, parallel web configuration reduces cutting resistance and helps clear chips efficiently. This bit is installed and used by machinists, maintenance mechanics, and metalworking professionals.
This mechanics-length drill bit is suited for drilling carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloys, stainless steel, and general steel in shop and field maintenance environments. The shorter mechanics-length body gives added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it a practical choice for tight-clearance drilling or applications where bit deflection is a concern. The spiral flute geometry supports consistent chip evacuation during through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations.
Designed for use in drill presses, milling machines, and hand-held power drills equipped with chucks compatible with a Weldon flat shank. Suitable for drilling carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloys, stainless steel, and general steel workpieces.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance mechanics using standard drill press or power tool equipment. Secure the Weldon flat shank firmly in a compatible chuck before operation to prevent slippage under torque. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material when drilling high alloy or stainless steel to extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or damage before each use and replace the bit if the point shows chipping or excessive dullness.
