The USA REFRIGERANTS r454b is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant classified A2L, meaning mildly flammable, and sold in a 20-pound cylinder. It carries a global warming potential (GWP) of 465, making it a lower-GWP alternative to legacy HFC refrigerants in systems designed specifically for R454B. The cylinder uses a left-hand threaded connection, standard for flammable and mildly flammable refrigerant containers. This refrigerant is miscible with polyolester (POE) lubricants and is intended for use only in equipment engineered and rated for R454B service. Licensed HVAC technicians handle installation and recovery of this refrigerant.
R454B is suited for residential and light commercial cooling and heating applications. Compatible system types include heat pumps, chillers, mini-split systems, multi-split systems, ducted-split units, window air conditioners, portable AC units, and packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs). This refrigerant is not a drop-in replacement for older system designs and should only be used in equipment specifically designed for R454B. Technicians transitioning equipment lines or servicing newer A2L-rated systems will encounter this refrigerant with increasing frequency as the industry phases down high-GWP alternatives.
Designed for use in equipment specifically engineered for R454B refrigerant, including heat pumps, chillers, mini-split and multi-split systems, ducted-split units, window air conditioners, portable AC units, and PTACs. This refrigerant is not compatible with systems designed for other refrigerant types and must not be used as a retrofit charge in equipment not rated for A2L refrigerants.
R454B is an A2L mildly flammable refrigerant and must be handled only by EPA 608-certified technicians using equipment rated and listed for A2L service. Recover all refrigerant before opening a system and follow applicable ASHRAE 15 safety code requirements for ventilation and ignition source control in the work area. Do not mix R454B with other refrigerants or use it in systems not explicitly designed for R454B. Cylinders are hazmat-regulated — follow DOT transport and storage requirements at all times.
