The REFRIGERANT R-454B is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant classified as A2L, meaning mildly flammable, and supplied in a 20-pound cylinder. With a global warming potential (GWP) of 465, it serves as a lower-GWP alternative to legacy HFC refrigerants in HVAC systems specifically engineered for R-454B. The cylinder features a left-hand threaded connection, which is standard for mildly flammable refrigerant containers. This refrigerant is miscible with polyolester (POE) lubricants and is intended exclusively for equipment designed and rated for R-454B service. Installation, charging, recovery, and servicing should be performed only by EPA Section 608-certified HVAC technicians.
R-454B is designed for residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump applications. Compatible equipment includes heat pumps, chillers, ducted split systems, mini-split and multi-split systems, packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs), window air conditioners, and portable air conditioners specifically designed for R-454B refrigerant. This refrigerant is not a retrofit or drop-in replacement for systems designed for other refrigerants and must only be used in equipment approved for A2L refrigerants.
Compatible only with HVAC and refrigeration equipment specifically engineered and certified for R-454B refrigerant. Typical applications include residential and light commercial heat pumps, chillers, ducted split systems, mini-split systems, multi-split systems, PTAC units, window air conditioners, and portable air conditioners. Do not use as a replacement for refrigerants such as R-410A unless the equipment manufacturer specifically approves R-454B.
R-454B is classified as an A2L mildly flammable refrigerant and must be handled using equipment and procedures approved for A2L refrigerants. Only EPA Section 608-certified technicians should perform charging, recovery, or service. Recover all refrigerant before opening the refrigeration circuit, avoid mixing with other refrigerants, and follow applicable ASHRAE 15 safety requirements regarding ventilation and ignition source control. Store and transport cylinders in accordance with DOT hazardous materials regulations.
