The TUNGALOY 6856689 is a VBMT-series coated carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to ISO and ANSI standards under the ISO designation VBMT160404-PS, this insert features an AH725 grade substrate with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for thermal resistance and extended tool life. The 35-degree diamond shape (V) provides a sharp, positive-rake geometry suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes. With a 0.4 mm corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 2.50 mm, it delivers consistent surface quality across a wide range of workpiece materials. Installed via screw-hold clamping, it fits standard VBMT toolholders and is ready for immediate use.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. It is well-suited for both production-floor CNC environments and job shop lathe work where multi-material capability is required. The neutral hand orientation and two cutting edges make it a practical choice for high-mix, low-waste machining programs. Material grades P15, P30, M15, M30, K25, K30, S15, and S25 are covered.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use insert for standard VBMT screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick diamond-style insert in the VBMT series.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a safe, powered-down or E-stopped state before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Confirm proper seating and clamping torque before resuming cutting operations.
