The TUNGALOY 6808838 is a TPGN321 LX11 grade ceramic turning insert designed for high-speed machining of hard materials. Built from alumina TiC ceramic with a PVD-applied TiN coating, this insert delivers thermal resistance and surface integrity where carbide grades reach their limits. The triangular insert body provides three usable cutting edges, and the honed cutting edge style reduces micro-chipping on difficult workpieces. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert suits finishing operations that demand tight tolerances and fine surface finishes. Installation requires a compatible clamp-style toolholder accepting TPGN-geometry inserts.
This insert is intended for finishing passes on hard materials including hardened steels and similar difficult-to-machine workpieces. Typical applications include turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers in industrial and production environments. The positive rake geometry and flat-top chip breaker configuration support chip control during light to moderate depths of cut. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and CNC technicians are the primary installers. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both right-hand and left-hand toolholders configured for TPGN geometry.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for TPGN321 geometry inserts used in clamp-style turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 1/8-inch thick, 60-degree triangular insert with positive clearance. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards; ISO insert code TPGN160304.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and verify the clamp is torqued per the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the pocket and clamp for wear or debris before installing a new edge; a contaminated pocket can cause premature edge failure or insert fracture.
