The TUNGALOY 6804999 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Series J product line, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries grade J740 with a PVD-applied TiN coating and a micrograin carbide substrate, delivering edge stability and wear resistance on ferrous materials. The cutting width is 1.5 mm (0.0591 inches) with a maximum depth of cut of 2.1 mm (0.0827 inches). A 0.05 mm corner radius and F-style chip breaker geometry make this insert well suited for precise, controlled chip formation in finish and semi-finish grooving applications. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is configured for right-hand cutting and fits Series J screw-clamp toolholders. Primary workpiece material designations are M (stainless steel) and P (steel) per ISO material coding, making it appropriate for general-purpose turning shops running stainless alloys and carbon or alloy steels. The screw-clamp holding method provides secure, repeatable seating in compatible toolblocks. Typical applications include external groove profiling, undercut preparation, and snap-ring groove machining on turned components in both production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in Series J screw-clamp grooving toolholders accepting JTGR-style inserts with a 3150 insert size designation. Suitable for machining stainless steel (ISO material code M) and steel (ISO material code P) workpieces.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped, locked-out state. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-clamp mechanism as specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Verify insert orientation (right-hand) matches the toolholder pocket before clamping. Inspect the seating pocket for chips or debris before each insert change to ensure full, flat contact and accurate edge positioning.
