The TOOL-FLO 5003608AC22A is a laydown threading insert engineered for external NPT thread cutting on CNC lathes and manual threading operations. Built from solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN PVD coating, this insert delivers the heat resistance and edge durability required for continuous threading passes in ferrous and exotic alloys. It is configured in the 16ER insert style, cuts at 8 threads per inch (TPI), and features a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. The cutting edge to theoretical edge length measures 0.0500 inches and the face-of-insert to tip centerline dimension is 0.0700 inches. Machinists and toolroom technicians in the oil, gas, plumbing, and pipe fabrication sectors are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for external NPT threading applications in both production and job-shop environments. The right-hand cutting orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand threading toolholders using the 16ER seating configuration. Typical use cases include threading pipe ends, fittings, and valve bodies to NPT standards in residential, commercial, and industrial piping system fabrication. The AlTiN coating supports higher cutting speeds compared to uncoated carbide, reducing cycle times on production runs.
Designed for use in 16ER-style laydown threading toolholders configured for external NPT right-hand thread cutting at 8 TPI.
Installation of threading inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify insert orientation and thread form engagement before initiating a threading cycle. Inspect the insert edge for chipping after each run and replace at first sign of edge breakdown to avoid thread form errors.
