The TITAN USA CD40240 is a No. 40 wire-size jobber-length drill bit machined from high speed steel and coated with black oxide for basic corrosion resistance and reduced friction. It measures 2.375 inches overall with a 1.375-inch spiral flute and a 118-degree standard point angle. The straight-cylindrical shank has a diameter of 0.0980 inches (2.50 mm). With two right-hand spiral flutes in a regular helix, the CD40240 is designed for general-purpose drilling operations in production and maintenance environments. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and HVAC or electrical tradespeople reach for wire-gauge bits like this when drilling pilot holes, clearance holes, and access points in tight-tolerance work.
The CD40240 is suited for drilling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys including titanium. Its 14xD flute-to-diameter ratio gives adequate chip clearance in moderate-depth holes up to 1.375 inches. The bit is sold individually and fits standard drill chucks that accept straight-cylindrical shanks in the 0.0980-inch range. Typical applications include sheet metal fabrication, electrical panel work, plumbing rough-in drilling, and HVAC bracket and fitting work where small-diameter precision holes are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or stock jobber drill bit for any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.0980-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys and titanium as indicated by material codes P, M, K, N, and S.
Install in a hand drill, drill press, or CNC spindle with a chuck rated for the 0.0980-inch shank diameter. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and verify chuck jaws are fully tightened to prevent bit walking on hard materials. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so apply cutting fluid manually when drilling stainless steel, cast iron, or titanium to manage heat buildup and extend tool life. Dispose of worn bits per shop safety procedures and replace before the cutting edge causes oversized holes or work hardening in the base material.
