The THOMAS BETTS J is a grounding clamp designed to bond grounding conductors to ground rods and pipes in electrical grounding systems. It accepts 2 AWG stranded wire and 10 AWG solid wire, making it suitable for a range of residential and light commercial grounding applications. The clamp fits a 1/2-inch diameter ground rod and accommodates pipe sizes up to 1 inch. Licensed electricians and grounding contractors install this hardware during service entrance work, panel installations, and supplemental grounding electrode installations. At 0.21 pounds, it is a compact, single-piece clamp suited for direct burial or above-grade installations.
This grounding clamp is used wherever a code-compliant mechanical connection is required between a grounding conductor and a ground rod or metallic pipe electrode. Typical applications include residential service entrance grounding, subpanel grounding electrode connections, and supplemental grounding electrode installations in both new construction and retrofit projects. The clamp handles both stranded and solid wire, giving the installer flexibility when working with different conductor types on the same job.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard grounding clamp for use with 1/2-inch ground rods and metallic pipe electrodes up to 1 inch in residential and light commercial electrical grounding systems.
Installation is performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NEC Article 250 grounding and bonding requirements. De-energize all affected circuits and confirm the service is shut down before making grounding electrode connections. Ensure the conductor is fully seated in the clamp before tightening the hardware to achieve a solid mechanical and electrical connection. Do not substitute wire sizes outside the listed AWG ratings, as undersized conductors may not meet code requirements for the grounding electrode system.
