The THOMAS BETTS CW-1/2 is a single-gang steel switch box designed for residential and light commercial electrical rough-in work. Built for old-construction (retrofit) mounting, it accepts standard wiring devices and provides a secure, rigid enclosure for switches and outlets. The box measures 3 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 2-3/4 inches in depth. Five 1/2-inch knockouts are provided for conduit or cable entry. The galvanized steel body resists corrosion in typical interior environments. This box is a standard component installed by licensed electricians during device replacement or retrofit wiring projects.
This switch box is suited for single-gang device installations in existing wall cavities where new-construction brackets are not an option. The old-construction mount style is intended for retrofit applications where the box is installed through a finished wall opening without access to framing. It accommodates one switch, receptacle, or other single-gang wiring device. The 1/2-inch knockouts support standard trade-size conduit fittings or cable connectors commonly used in residential and light commercial wiring.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard retrofit switch box compatible with single-gang wiring devices in old-construction electrical installations.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Always shut off branch circuit power at the panel and verify the circuit is de-energized with a non-contact voltage tester before beginning work. The old-construction design requires cutting an appropriately sized opening in the finished wall surface and securing the box using its integral mounting ears or wings. Do not overtighten device screws against the box tabs, as this can crack or deform the mounting ears.
