The THOMAS BETTS 8424 is a steel set screw conduit coupling designed to join sections of rigid metal conduit (RMC) and intermediate metal conduit (IMC) at a 1-1/4 inch trade size. The coupling uses a set screw connection method to secure conduit ends firmly in place without requiring threading tools beyond a standard screwdriver or hex key. Constructed from steel with a non-insulated interior, this fitting is rated for concrete-tight applications, making it suitable for embedment or direct contact with concrete surfaces. Electricians install this coupling during rough-in work wherever a straight, in-line conduit joint is required.
This coupling is used in commercial and industrial electrical installations where rigid or IMC conduit systems are routed through concrete slabs, walls, or structural members. Its concrete-tight rating makes it appropriate for use in poured-concrete or masonry environments where moisture resistance and mechanical integrity at the joint are required. The set screw design speeds installation in situations where threaded couplings are impractical or not specified by the design.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit coupling for 1-1/4 inch trade size rigid metal conduit (RMC) and intermediate metal conduit (IMC) systems.
Installation is performed by licensed electricians in accordance with NEC requirements for rigid and IMC conduit systems. Power down and de-energize all conductors in the conduit run before opening or modifying any conduit joint. Insert conduit ends fully into each side of the coupling and tighten set screws to secure the joint. Verify concrete-tight integrity before encasement if the fitting is being embedded in poured concrete.
