The THOMAS BETTS 3903 is a bronze U-bolt rod clamp used to bond and ground electrical conductors to threaded rod or pipe in grounding electrode systems. It accepts wire sizes from 4 AWG to 4/0 AWG and fits pipe or rod ranging from 1-1/4 inches to 2 inches in diameter. The bronze construction resists corrosion in wet or direct-burial environments, making it well suited for utility, commercial, and industrial grounding applications. It carries UL listing under File E3060 and CSA certification, meeting the compliance requirements commonly specified on commercial electrical projects. Electricians and grounding system installers are the primary trade installing this clamp.
This clamp is used in grounding electrode installations where a bonding connection between a conductor and a threaded rod or metal pipe is required. Typical applications include grounding to water pipe electrodes, concrete-encased electrode systems, and structural steel grounding assemblies. Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with applicable NEC grounding and bonding requirements. De-energize all circuits and verify zero voltage before making any connections. Ensure the rod or pipe surface is clean and free of paint, scale, or corrosion at the clamp contact point to maintain a reliable low-impedance bond. Do not over-torque the U-bolt hardware beyond what is needed to seat the conductor firmly against the rod or pipe.
