The SUMITOMO U103946 is a TPG322-style ceramic turning insert designed for precision lathe and turning center operations. Manufactured in the SN2000K ceramic grade, this insert is engineered for dry or minimal-lubrication cutting on cast iron workpieces at high surface speeds where carbide inserts typically fall short. The triangular insert geometry features a 60-degree included angle, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. With a positive rake configuration and 11-degree relief angle, the insert promotes clean chip formation and reduced cutting forces on brittle ferrous materials. It conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards and carries the ANSI code TPG322.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of cast iron components in production machining environments. The SN2000K ceramic grade performs best at elevated cutting speeds without coolant, making it a practical choice for high-volume turning operations on gray cast iron, ductile iron, and similar K-group workpiece materials. It is installed via a clamp-style insert holding method and seats in standard TPG-series toolholders. Machinists and CNC turning specialists working in job shops or production facilities will find this insert compatible with a wide range of ANSI-standard TPG toolholder systems.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard TPG322 insert seats using clamp-style TPG-series toolholders conforming to ANSI geometry specifications.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert clamp. Ceramic inserts are brittle and should not be used with interrupted cuts or heavy coolant thermal shock, as this can cause edge fracture.
