The SUMITOMO U101396 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD Series, designed for high-performance hole-making in cast iron and steel workpieces. Identified by the SMDT1700MTL-C designation, this drill features a 17mm cutting diameter and a 140-degree included point angle. The TiAlCr and TiSi coating applied via PVD process improves wear resistance and heat dissipation during aggressive drilling operations. Through-coolant capability allows cutting fluid to reach the cutting edge directly, supporting longer tool life and chip evacuation in deep-hole applications. The MTL-C insert geometry is matched to the ACX70 carbide grade. Machinists and toolroom professionals working on production lines or job shop floors are the primary users.
This drill is suited for machining cast iron and steel in both roughing and finishing drilling operations. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing the carbide tip to be swapped without discarding the drill body. Through-coolant support makes it practical for CNC machining centers where high-pressure coolant delivery is available. The SMD Series architecture is intended for medium to high production volume environments where consistent hole quality and repeatable tool changeover matter.
Designed for use with compatible SMD Series drill bodies accepting the MTL-C replaceable tip format. Primary workpiece material compatibility includes cast iron (ISO K) and steel (ISO P) as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation of replaceable tip drills should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tool manufacturer's tip-seating procedure. Ensure the drill body is clean and free of chips or debris before seating the carbide tip. Confirm through-coolant supply pressure and flow rate are compatible with the machine spindle before operation. Always follow shop safety protocols and machine tool manufacturer guidelines when setting up tooling.
