The SUMITOMO U101374 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD Series, designed for high-performance hole making in steel workpieces. It features a 31/32-inch diameter cutting tip manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating. The 140-degree included point angle is suited for centering stability and reduced thrust in production drilling. Through-coolant capability channels cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, extending tool life and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole applications. The MTL insert geometry is optimized for steel-cutting performance. This tool is installed and operated by machining professionals in CNC turning and machining center environments.
The U101374 is intended for drilling steel workpieces, classified under primary workpiece material code P, covering unalloyed and low-alloy steels. Its replaceable tip design makes it well suited for production environments where minimizing spindle downtime is a priority. When the cutting tip wears, the tip is swapped out rather than replacing the full drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole. Through-coolant support makes it appropriate for setups with high-pressure coolant delivery, common in horizontal machining centers and CNC drill-tap machines running steel components.
Designed as a replaceable tip drill within the SUMITOMO SMD Series platform. Compatible drill bodies and tip seats must match the SMD Series specification. Intended for primary use in steel workpiece materials (material code P).
Installation and tool changes should be performed by qualified machinists following the machine tool manufacturer lockout and energy isolation procedures before accessing the spindle. Ensure the drill body tip seat is clean and free of chips before seating the replaceable tip. Confirm through-coolant ports are clear and that machine coolant pressure is set to the value specified in the SMD Series tooling documentation before running. Follow applicable shop safety and tooling torque procedures as outlined by the drill body manufacturer.
