The SUMITOMO U101355 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance metal-cutting applications in production machining environments. The drill features a 47/64 inch diameter cutting tip with a 140-degree included point angle, providing a geometry optimized for entry stability and chip evacuation in steel workpieces. The tip carries a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating under the ACX70 manufacturer grade designation, delivering thermal resistance and edge wear protection during interrupted and continuous cuts. Through-coolant capability allows direct delivery of coolant to the cutting zone, extending tool life in deep-hole drilling operations. Machining technicians and CNC setup personnel are the typical installers.
The U101355 is suited for drilling steel and steel alloys in CNC machining centers and drill presses equipped with through-spindle coolant systems. The MTL insert geometry is configured for P-category workpiece materials, making it appropriate for carbon steels, alloy steels, and similar ferrous stock. Typical applications include production drilling of close-tolerance bores where consistent tip replacement and repeatable diameter are required. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost per hole by allowing tip exchange without replacing the full drill body.
Designed as a replaceable tip for use within the Sumitomo SMD series modular drill body system. Verify body compatibility by series designation and tip diameter before ordering.
Installation of replaceable carbide tips should be performed by qualified CNC machinists or tooling technicians following the drill body manufacturer torque and seating procedures in the SMD series documentation. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before removing or installing the tip. Inspect the tip seat on the drill body for chips, debris, or wear before seating the new tip. Through-coolant fittings and pressure should be verified to match machine and toolholder specifications before resuming operation.
